Leading project partner Maltepe District Governorship in cooperation with Maltepe Municipality and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has launched an exemplary humanitarian project, entitled “Diagnosis and treatment of school-age Syrian refugee children’s post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD)“. Based on scientific diagnosis and treatment literature, 354 school-age Syrian children aged between 6-17 years old were screened for PTSD by house-to-house visits paid to 183 households.
To that end, the Child Post-traumatic Stress Reaction Index (CPTS-RI) scale was administered to research population in the scope of initial diagnosis study. Afterwards, a well-known scientific therapy technique, namely Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), has been undertaken for treatment study. As a result, it is supposed to treat all Syrian refugee children with PTSD symptoms and hence to obtain a 100% increase in the schooling rate of refugee children due to their improved psychological well-being and social adaptation levels. For the time being, our project achieved to get 100% increase in schooling rates while the treatment study is underway.
